There are a number of large web design firms that do quality work. The problem is that if your budget is too small they either won't take your project or they assign it to low-level / beginner designers within their firm. They use your project to "train" their young, inexperienced designers. Either way, the prices are typically too high for what you are getting.
Local / Small Web Design Firms
In our area (southern New Jersey), there are a number of small operations that make websites. These companies typically lack knowledge and talent. Frankly, there are a scant few design firms in southern New Jersey that have ANY talent whatsoever and their credentials are even worse. While their prices are lower, they are no more reasonable, as the product they produce is just about worthless in our estimation.
When you are hiring a small web design firm, make sure you ask 3 VERY important questions:
- "Show Me Your Portfolio"
Very simply. if their past work looks unimpressive, you can be sure that
your project will be the same.
- What Is Your Training / Education?
Many design firms in southern New Jersey have no formal training in website design or have mediocre credentials; like a 6 month program at a tech school. This is unfortunate because "they don't even know what it is that they don't know." The VERY unfortunate thing is YOU are the one who suffers ... not them.
- Can I Have a List of References?
Take the time to find out if they delivered their work ON TIME and for the price quoted. Many firms under-bid a project only to find creative ways to nickle-and-dime you later. NEVER hire someone who is working at an hourly rate! Get a flat-price quote and make sure it includes ALL COSTS!
